Stained Glass Lamp: How to Make One

Depending on how creative one is will depend on how good of a job you will do when creating your own stained glass lamp. These lamps can be done alone or can be done with children allowing this to be a family activity. The necessary tools will need to be handy to allow you to finish in a timely manner.

Creating these Tiffany stained glass lamp shades can be difficult if you do not have everything you need already there to be used. The lamp shades are quite beautiful once they are completed and are on display. You will be surprised how many people will ask where you have purchased your lamp and will want one themselves. These lamps will resemble a lamp from Tiffany's and therefore will be a focal point in any room where it is present.

Depending on what size lamp you are going to be working with will depend on what size lamp shade you are going to be needing. You will not want the lampshade to be either too big or too small. The size is the first thing that you want to consider then you will want to decide on the type of glass that you will be using. Depending on the pattern that you are using will depend on what color of glass you will want.

If you are creating a pattern of flowers and the bottom portion of the lampshade is the grass you will not want to use a glass color of blue as this will be difficult to use. Therefore you will want to purchase a stained glass kit in green. Once you have the base for your lamp shade you will then begin to work on the glass portion. You can either use antique looking glass or you can use jewel looking glass pieces as well. There are a number of styles that can be done when you are working on stained glass lamp shades.

You will need to make sure that you have your pattern handy before proceeding, if you are not using a pattern and are just creating a stained glass lamp shade with a number of different pieces of glass then first arrange the pieces on the shade before gluing to ensure that the pieces are going to fit in the area that you want it in. Otherwise you are going to glue a piece down and other pieces might not fit with it and you would have needed to cut that particular piece of glass. In the instance that you need to cut a piece of glass you will first want to score the glass where you want the cut to be and then use the pliers to break the glass in that area.

If the piece of glass that you need in one spot is not the right size meaning it is to small then you can always take a number of stained glass pieces and align them in the right shape, you may still have to cut the glass pieces to make the appropriate shape however. If you do this you may want to make the other pieces that will would have been this large the same way. You can cut the piece into small pieces and then align them in a way that will keep the flow of all the pieces rather than some pieces looking better than others.

You want to make the stained glass lamp shade appear as it was professionally made and this will require careful placement of the pieces and will require that some work be done. If this is the first time making a stained glass lamp shade then it is not going to turn out as well as the fifth lamp shade would. You will get better with more practice. Lamp shades can even be made using glass mosaic techniques.
