Stained Glass Sandblasting

Stained glass is a name used for an art that includes several ways of decorating glass for mirrors, windows or lamps. Stained glass can be created from a few colored glass pieces cut into a shape or fused together using copper strips. It can be painted, engraved, stained and even sandblasted.

 

Sandblasting is a captivating method to add texture and etching stained glass design. In contrast to colored stained glass, sandblasting gives an exclusive icy or smooth aspect to the stained glass. This method can be used to decorate a stained glass design before painting it or you can use sandblasting to create the entire project.

 

A sandblasting unit includes 4 essential elements. The air compressor is the engine of the unit, providing compressed. The extremely pressurized sand passes through a pipe into an isolated compartment and then it’s forced through a nozzle. You will use a set of extendable rubber gloves to perform the sandblasting. You can extend the gloves and control the nozzle while sandblasting.

 

A “transparent resist” is a special adhesive paper that you must use to make your pattern. You could also use ordinary contact paper but it is pretty hard to use this paper for stained glass designs because it isn’t robust enough. Use a pencil to draw your pattern on the transparent resist.

 

Keep in mind that every gap will be a frosted portion on your stained glass design. Also try to be imaginative and design all kinds of shapes. When your design is complete, put it on your cutting pad and cut it with a razor blade. The next step is to carefully remove the support paper and roll the transparent resist.

 

Make sure you don’t leave any air bubbles or lifted margins because sand could get into those spaces and ruin your project.

 

Follow the producer’s instructions for sandblasting. Cautiously remove the transparent resist and you got a gorgeous stained glass. Now you can paint the stained glass and put it into a kiln. Off course you only have to do this procedure if your initial design requires it. Else you can frame the stained lass because your project is completed.
