Glass Supplies and Techniques:
Delphi Glass Is the Leading Supplier of Quality Glass, Equipment and Supplies.
If you are interested in learning stained glass, there are some essential tools that you will need to have on hand and there are also extra tools that are nice to have around, but that are not necessarily required to work on stained glass projects.
The following tools should be considered essential when working to assemble your collection of supplies. Some are cheap stained glass tools and others are expensive when used for making glass art and stained glass windows.
Glass Cutter
The process of cutting glass is fairly simple, but it is made even easier when you have the right type of glass cutter. There are many different options, but for beginners the best choice is the pistol-grip glass cutter. This is the one tool that you will utilize more than any other, so it is critical to find the perfect one for you. If you are not satisfied with the one you have chosen, try different cutters until you find your match.
There are two different types of glass cutters. The difference is in the materials. One type contains a tungsten carbide cutting wheel; the other is made from steel. The steel cutters are almost always less expensive, however they also do not tend to last as long as the tungsten carbide models. If you are working with a soft glass, then the steel cutter will be an excellent choice for you.
The only other decision that you will need to make in regard to the cutter that you select is whether to get a self lubricating tool. An oil-filled glass cutter will enable you to work faster and to ensure that your cutter is always ready when you need it.
Glass Grinders/Files
In order to smooth out the edges of the glass after cutting, you will need either a grinder or a diamond file. Either will do the job, the file is cheaper. But using a file is a tedious process and so many glass makers opt for a grinder. You need your glass to fit correctly, so you should always choose a file or grinder known for precision work.
If you opt to purchase a grinder, pay attention to the warranty offered and the accessories available for the specific grinder.
Soldering Iron
A 100v soldering iron is probably the second most commonly used tool in your stained glass toolbox. There are many different types of soldering irons and several standard sizes. Make sure that the iron you select is comfortable for you, as you will most definitely be spending a lot of time with it in your hand. If possible, buy a soldering iron with a built in thermostat for proper temperature control. This is used for the foiling instead of the older, lead came method of fastening the glass pieces.
Grozier and Breaking
Pliers are a very simple tool, but you will be at a loss without them. They will come in handy for helping to break difficult cuts and to snip off any small pieces that need removed for proper fitting. These tools need not be expensive, but unless you intend to replace them frequently it is important to buy quality tools.
Other Tools as Necessary
There are many other stained glass tools available for purchase and a walk through a stained glass supply store will give you access to the myriad of options facing you. For example, glass kilns can be used to slup different shapes of glass into your pieces. However, the list above encompasses all of the tools that you must have. Talk to others involved in stained glass making and you will likely pick up tips and suggestions for completing your collection of stained glass tools.
