Stained Glass Storing

All those who work with stained glass are aware of this subject. Having glass sheets in every room and on every table and dresser might not be so pleasant. However if you ever decide to clean the glass out of your home you’ll realize that it will not be to easy.

Creating a pile of glass sheets is a bad idea because you risk damaging the glass, not to mention how hard it will be for you when you will need a sheet that’s placed on the bottom of the pile. It is recommended to store the stained glass supplies of sheets on their side. So, most of the stained glass manufacturers have the same problem. How can they store the stained glass sheets if they can’t afford a special glass rack system?

Most of the stained glass manufacturers probably dream to buy the rack they see everyday at their stained glass supplies store. The neat shelves with the right spacing to fit 12 x 12 inches glass sheets make this rack system the perfect way to store the glass sheets. But, how can one acquire something like this without spending a lot of money? Well it is not very hard.

Go to a home improvement shop and buy a 10 inches wide x 4 feet high cabinet. Make sure that the shelves are adjustable because it is very important. Two cabinets like this one would provide enough space for your stained glass sheets. The only problem is that the pieces are 10 inch wide and you would only need 5 inch sections to fit the glass sheets. So, you must divide each section in half. Again you may wonder how, is that even possible? Well that’s not a big deal either.

You only need several 12 inches long x 2 inches wide thin metal pieces. Because they’re only 0.12 inches thick they are very easy to bend. The best thing is that these pieces of metal have holes at their ends. You can put 2 pieces of metal at the bottom of every shelf, creating a separator on which the glass sheets can lean. So buy 2 cabinets and a bunch of metal pieces.

Assemble the cabinets, but use only 2 of the 5 shelves because you need a 12 inches distance between each shelf. So including the bottom one you will get a total of 3 adjustable shelves. To make the shelves adjustable you must drill some holes into the sides of the cabinet and insert small metal pins in those holes. You need to use 4 pins for every shelf.

Use 2 metal strips for each shelf to create the divider that you need. Place one piece in the front of the shelf and the other piece toward the back. Bend each metal piece 2 inches at one end, creating an L shape. Use screws to attach the 2 inches side to the bottom of every shelf, so the 10 inches side will hang down therefore creating the separator.

The metal strips are as thick as needed so that the glass sheets won’t bend them. So, you have now 2 x 5 inches sections on each side of the divider. Now you can assemble the other cabinet the same way like you did with the first one.

So, you will have enough space to store all your stained glass pieces. Your house is once again glass-free and there’s nothing to worry about any more. The best part is that in order to produce these rack systems you don’t need to spend more than $100. Isn’t that just great?
